Damage Isn't the Signal
Muscles don’t grow because you damaged them. They grow because you asked them — via sustained contraction under load — to do more than they could. The damage is correlated, not causal. A bruise heals. A bruise doesn’t build muscle.
Bones respond to impact load (Wolff’s law), not to pain. Skin responds to friction (callus) and UV (melanin), not to injury generically. Immune systems respond to antigen exposure, not to stress. Each system listens for a specific signal, and it grows by answering that signal.
This is signal-specific adaptation: a system grows to meet the specific demand it interprets as “more than I can currently do.” Generic damage produces repair — return to baseline. Only the specific signal produces adaptation.
Which raises the question for everything else. When I “stress” an organisation, a codebase, a person, or myself — what signal am I actually sending? Is it the one the system listens for? Or just damage, reflexively repaired?
