The Magic Survives the Lantern

When physical media die, the form migrates to new substrates. The content survives the container. But digital stasis is the inverse: the lantern survives the magic. The abandoned website is still lit — still serving HTTP 200 — but the life has left.

Sterling also rejected the “Whig theory of history” for technology: progress isn’t inevitable, it’s contingent. Dead technologies sometimes undergo delayed resurrection — microphotography was a parlor trick for a century before it enabled integrated circuits.
