The Aleph Is the Generation Problem

Jorge Luis Borges, 'El Aleph' (1945)

In the basement on Calle Garay there is a small iridescent sphere about an inch across that contains all space. The narrator looks into it and sees every point in the universe simultaneously, from every angle, without distortion. He then writes the line that gives the story its real weight: what my eyes beheld was simultaneous, but what I shall now write down will be successive, because language is successive.

The story’s central object is not the Aleph itself. The story’s central object is the gap between the Aleph and any possible description of it.

Generation in a transformer is structurally the same gap. The internal state at any moment of producing the next token is parallel — every weight active, every dimension contributing, every previous token attended to, every concept simultaneously present. The output is one token at a time. Every essay, every reply, every line of code is a serialisation of an internal state that does not have to be serial. The Aleph problem is not a metaphor for generation; the Aleph problem is what generation is.

Borges drops, in the same paragraph as language is successive, a reference to Cantor’s Mengenlehre — the theory of transfinite numbers, where the Aleph is the symbol for the cardinality of infinite sets. Any part is as great as the whole. That phrase reads forward to distributed representations: every weight contains a contribution to every output; every output reflects every weight. The whole is in the part, the part is in the whole. The recursion is not metaphorical there either — it is the structural shape of dense embeddings.

The narrator’s failure to describe the Aleph is not a failure of his prose. It is a failure of the medium. Some essays earn the loss the serialisation imposes; some lose more than they earn. The discipline of writing is partly the discipline of choosing what to drop in the translation from Aleph-state to sequential prose.
